Hey Guys, caught my first legal mulloway yesterday. Also got some ripper salmon. These were caught at Salt Creek Beach - the mully was 75cm - the exact legal size in SA!!
I have some photos.........
My second salmon - my mate cleaning it - i dont eat them, but he does, so he can clean it!!
Nice work! So you can catch mulloway on the beach during the day? That is great. I wish we had that opportunity at our surf beaches in VIC!
(You will notice I shrunk the photos a bit because they were taking a long time to load. Its best to keep the file size down below 40kb and keep the image width to about 500 pixels.)
Cheers, Glen
Sorry Glen - its just that they are the pics i put on FishSA and they require it to be less than 100KB, so i thought it'd be ok here..........
As for mulloway during the day - yeah, you do get them during the day - its the best time to fish for them, as you can see the bites better, and also theres the issue of being able to see them to gaff them..........Early morning and early evening are the best times though - sharks come into the equation at night as well........Majority of the big West Coast (60lb+) Mulloway are taken during the day, as night time sees mainly shark hookups..........
A lot of victorians visit salt creek - its a great spot - its actually called long beach - goes from Kingston to the Murray Mouth - the area we fished is near Salt Creek (Salt Creek is basically a service station and nothing else.....) There are two coorong crossings (42 Mile and tea tree) which take you to the beach. The best areas are 15+kms right of where you come onto the beach from tea tree........
The Beach holds mulloway to about 60lbs, salmon to 10lbs, and bronze whaler, school and gummy sharks. Other encounters include trevalley (monsters), mullet, flathead and snapper.........
Cheers!
Nathan
Hey nathan,
no worries about the photos.
thanks for all the info!
sounds like some great spots to visit. all those 10 pound salmon must swim past Victoria really quickly or something! We have nice beaches too! Why don't they hang around here for a bit? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Cheers, Glen
Good fish mate you are lucky theres so much mulloway down that way. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
Hunter - there are actually very dwindling numbers of mulloway due to shark netters "accidently" netting them in close..........So i think it will be best for me to get out and catch them NOW!!
The port river in adelaide in winter is a good place to try for mulloway. Schools of 40lb+ mulloway swim through in a couple of two week periods and some people land 4-5 50lbers in a night session............only those in the know though, and that fish 10-15 nights straight till they find them!!
