The Sustainable Fisheries Section of the Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH), is presently assessing the ecologically sustainable management of export and Commonwealth-managed fisheries. One of the fisheries to be assessed is the Commonwealth Southern Squid Jig Fishery.
There are three possible decisions on an assessment, namely:
a ) exemption for five years,
b ) approval as a Wildlife Trade
Operation for three years with conditions and annual reporting, and
c ) prohibition of export.
Over the coming months, the assessments are to become available for public comment. Each of these assessments is likely to have a public comment period of at least 28 days.
