The Sustainable Fisheries Section of the Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH), is presently assessing the ecologically sustainable management of export and Commonwealth-managed fisheries. One of the fisheries to be assessed is the Commonwealth Southern Squid Jig Fishery.

There are three possible decisions on an assessment, namely:

a ) exemption for five years,

b ) approval as a Wildlife Trade

Operation for three years with conditions and annual reporting, and

c ) prohibition of export.

Over the coming months, the assessments are to become available for public comment. Each of these assessments is likely to have a public comment period of at least 28 days.

Further information: Register your interest (and the fishery

that you are interested in) with sustainable.fisheries@deh.gov.au

to be notified when assessments are available for public comment.
