Was told last night that potatoes work better than fish on the pin jags??
Anyone got experience with this, as its the second time ive been told it works!!
its news to me but I'll try anything,I'll even put a banana on if catches squid.

I've never tried em, but I'm skeptical about potatoes working better than whole fish......if they work better then why isn't evryone using spuds? I have heard of people catching on potato, paint brush handles and even cigarette butts <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' /> BUT that doesn't mean that on a consistent basis they will outfish other baits.
I think I'll stick to plain old fish for the time being.

Have got a couple of people on another site saying that they were used in the past with great success..........ill be trying them, but ill take some tommies and gar with me as well!!
I have heard that "pontiac" potato's work best when put on a squid spike peeled and raw, havn't tried it tho' 'cause I need to get squid in a hurry as i only try for them if i'm chasing Mulloway or Yellowtail Kingfish and need them for bait.
hi kingyfisher, what is a "pontiac" potato? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
A red skinned smooth type of potato.the flesh is slightly yellow,good for baking. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/as.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
ah ok thanks for the info.
So, how are the spud baits going?
My grandfather used potatoes all the time when I was a boy. At home he would peel the skin off a potato so it is all smooth and white in colour. Then he would shape it in the shape of a fish body, just long and oval, nothing fancy or detailed. He would then put the jig post through it and put it in a glass of water so the potato wouldn't discolour. He would take it out of water when he was ready to go fishing.
He caught heaps of squid with it on the boat and jetty, and the potato would last all day as the squid don't damage it. I guess the colour of it attracted the squid like a white platisc jig would. Also it was very cheap.
Interesting way of catching squids using spuds. I might have a go, but will be carrying other baitfish as well just in case.
