After catching one the other day, I thought I'd wait for the same tides roughly the same time of day same jigs etc and whilst there I also had a pilchard on a 3 ganged hook fishing for something else but the clever little squid managed to (every time) grab onto my pilchard pull the float about 3 feet under the water and as I wound it in would ride the bait all the way to my feet chomping away on the bait, then just take off.

Any thing I could of done to keeep them on the hook, I tried adding another gang hook loosely on the side of the original 3 but no success, if anything they slowed down from then.

Whilst doing this also inbetween baits or once they had eaten all my bait I was using two different coloured jigs with no luck at all so the pilchard was the winner on the day for attracting them but could'nt hook em up.

any ideas?

Hey Gav,

This is an easy one, you need to fish for the squid with pilchards on a pin jig (are you familiar with these - they're just a metal rod with the same hooks as the prawn jigs, should be able to get them at most tackle shops - ask for the squid jigs you use whole fish with). Thread the metal rod in the TAIL of the pilchard, and out through the mouth, and you should start hooking them up.

If you can't get hold of a pin jig, you could try pulling the pilchard out of the water once the squid has shown interest or grabbed it, then immediately replace the pilchard with a prawn jig. Some guys use this 'teaser' method quite effectively.

Good luck, and let us know how you go!

Cheers

Also Gav, there is a fair bit of info on baited jigs in the 'Squid fishing gear' forum, the thread is called 'Baited jigs'

Here is a photo of one of these jigs (acknowledgements to Mr Willy for his fine camerawork!)
Yeah give em a crack Gav - cant go wrong!!

Other than that, usually i find if they attack the pillie, and then you take it out the water and chuck the jag at them, they'll hit it!

Good to see my pics getting used!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
those baited jigs are cheap too seen em at k mart for a few dollars
Meh those jigs vary greatly in quality. Some are razor sharp and others couldnt cut you skin if you tried. Go for the sharpest ones only
