I just saw an update on the ABC news that reported that thousands and thousands of spider crabs were making their way into port phillip bay through the heads. They had under water footage and it was phenomenal. They reckon they cover the area of a football field and has something to do with mating. They completly covered the sea bed so that you couldnt even see the sand and were crawling on top of each other!
I'll try and find out more about it cos I wouldnt mind a couple of them ending up on my dinner plate!
I saw that on the news last night too. They think it has to with mating, but they haven't actually seen any of the crabs mating so they're not sure yet.
About eating them...they also said on the news report that spider crabs are not considered good eating! Better to stick to sand crabs. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

Yeah I've heard that too. I'm pretty sure theyre very dependant on the months that of the year that you catch them. The two I got were delicious and I can assure you that they had plenty of meat on them.
rohan,
what month of the year did you find them to have meat in them? from memory when i had caught them it was during summer...
cheers

You're right about spider crabs on iron chef AK, but I think they're a different sort to the ones we get here.
On a different note....did you see it on Saturday night? That guy's knife was massive! As was the tuna. Don't know if I'd enjoy grilled eyeballs though.
is the iron chef jamie oliver
Aah....no. Iron Chef is a japanese game show where challengers pit their skills against their choice of three 'Iron Chefs', who are undisputed master chefs. Each episode features a theme ingredient (on saturday night's episode the theme was tuna, but they have done many others like carrots, milk, eel, crab, soy beans, strawberries, lobster etc). Each chef has to prepare a multi-course meal in 1 hour (usually 4+ dishes), and the winner is the one whose dishes best articulate the theme ingredient. It's a top show because, although it involves cooking, it has sports-style commentary, and and hilarious english dubbing of the japanese cast. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
It's on SBS Saturday night at 8:30pm, if my memory serves me correctly <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />
