Hello All

My son and I are planning a squid fishing trip to RI. This is the first time squid fishing and I have two questions. What are the license requirements for squid fishing in the state of RI. And the second question is can anyone provide some hints on where to fish. We will be in the Point Judith pond area.

Thanks

You don't need a license as this is a non-regulated "fish" for lack of a better term. You do need squid jigs. You can get them at bait shops and stores that carry salt-water gear, as well as the internet. Yo-Zuri makes the better ones. Get a couple of different colors. Then rig it up with an egg sinker and watch what everyone else does. I have never jigged for squid in the Point Judith area but my nephew has in the past and has gone off of the fishing docks in Galillee. There are signs posted to keep out people except fisherman but at night they don't enforce it. I have fished for stripers there and have parked right at the docks withour bother. Most of us go to the Goat Island causeway in Newport. But I am looking for other spots myself.

Good Luck

No license needed for saltwater fishing in RI. The Goat Island causeway bridge in Newport is the most popular spot. Search on Mapquest for the Hyatt Hotel in Newport to see where it is. Probably a 20 minute ride from where you will be. Not sure if you can get squid off the commercial fishing docks in Point Judith Pond, but that should be a pretty likely spot. Good luck.
HI to All,

I am a 'newbie' at squid fishing. Went for the first time this past saturday aboard the Seven B's V boat out of Gaillee, Rhode Island. I love to Fluke fish and the idea of catching my own squid to use for bait when the fluke season finally opens is the reason I decided to try to try for Squid. (that and the fact that fluke season has not openned yet!). The crew and captain aboard the Seven B's helped me out tremendously. I caught a ton of squid and fell in love with jigging for squid. A customer on the boat lent me his squid jig from Japan and WOW I was getting 3 at a time. I can not wait to go back out this weekend on the Seven b's again, and I am looking for advice on what to purchase for Jigs. Any thoughts!
Yo-zuri & Yamashita are primarily what I use...in all shapes, szes & colors.

Twice a yr I get new ones...or ones I haven't tried yet.

I also have a few non brands & a couple of wooden ones.

Addicting now, ain't it?
