gonna try to go squidding on thurs night rain or not. ill be driving up from nyc so was wondering how would i be able to get to sakonnet point? is there a pier to fish off? how close is it to goat island? which is better sakonnet point or goat island? this will be my only chance to go squidding this year so hopefully ill be able to chance something. thanks

all the way from nyc? I thought there was a pier or a dock in NY, where people catch squid.
Dc1023 try google map for sakonnet point, for a place to fish. I myself have never tried there. Around Newport its been hit or miss night for some folks. My best night so far this season was 20 squids with 8hrs of work.
My best bet for you is to try the FrancesFleet charter boat for squid. costs about $45 for about 5hrs of fishing. www.francesfleet.com to see their fishing reports. they sail for squid Weds-Sunday 7pm 12 or 1am.

The Frances Fleet had cancel a few squid trips because the squidding was a bit slow and inconsistent.
If you're coming from NYC you have to crossover newport onto Portsmouth and over the bridge to Tiverton and south on rte 77 to Sakonnet Point. Good luck!

If you plan on squidding at Sakonnet Point, you may be in for a disappointment.
The last 2 years have not been productive. The town dock isn't all that large, and is usually loaded with people when the squid are in. I've been there 10 times this season, and everyone has taken less than 1/4 of a bucket. The few people I've talked to, have all been heading elsewhere. (They wouldn't tell me where.)
Next to the town dock is the yacht club and a commercial fishing operation. The owner of the yacht club, and the manager of the fishing boats do NOT enjoy people snooping around after dark. Both places are staffed all night, and they WILL have law enforcement remove you.
Speaking of law enforcement, if you have an out-of-state plate, bet on being pulled over. I speak from experience.
I'll be heading to Newport for the rest of this season.

This is what I'm talking about. No one has been getting any squid there for the past few years. I know a few of the commercial guys down there, and the 10 (or so) times I've been, everyone has been leaving early. It's been the same for the past 3 years.
The jetty has never been a good place to go. It's too turbulent, and the waves will wash your jig back to you in a matter of seconds.
One place to consider, is in Chatham (Cape Cod) or Nut Island in the Boston area. I just found out about these places, last year. I haven't tried them, but I may shortly!
