Tasmania Calamari / Squid Area Closure

A seasonal closure of the calamari fishery off the east coast has been declared to protect calamari during spawning. The closure is for three months, from 15 September 2006 to 14 December 2006, inclusive. The closure applies to all Tasmanian waters from Lemon Rock south of Wineglass Bay to the northern end of Marion Beach south of Maria Island and includes Coles Bay, Great Oyster Bay and the Mercury Passage. No squid, including calamari, may be taken or possessed during this time period in this area (see below):

I could see a similar closure being applied to the spawning squid around PPB and WPB heads around the same time of year - it would make some people angry, but I think that better recruitment of eggs and no targetting of squid while spawning would lead to a better year-round squid fishery in Victoria <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' /> As it is now, the fishing seems to be in decline in these areas, many regulars who target these spawners have been lamenting the lack of squid this season and in recent years.
well i haven't had much at flinders pier lately so i would have to agree with you. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Cry' />
i've always considered it odd that we were allowed to target spawning squid. seems wrong to me. but alas, i love a good feed of calamari, and have done it myself.

It would basically mean that mornington and flinders piers were completely empty for the closed season if they introduced it here.
thanks for the information one of my friends was in that place looking for squids
