‘Looking for Divers’ …. Great Victorian Fish Count 2006

Victorian Divers and snorkellers are once again preparing to take part in a ‘snapshot’ of Victoria’s marine reef–fish populations. The survey to be held between the 1st- 17th December will assess the distribution and abundance of 25 of our most interesting reef fish species.



Why Count Fish?

Victoria’s coastal waters are special – many of the amazing variety of marine plants and animals that inhabit Australia’s southern waters can’t be found anywhere else on earth. More than 700 different types of fish live among the kelp forests, seagrass meadows and sponge gardens of our reefs.



But very little is known about most of our fish. While those caught commercially or for recreational purposes have been the subject of substantial research, only a small body of knowledge exists about the vast majority of Victoria’s fish…
