Hi J.M,
have you spoken to any static gear fishermen?
Here in Cornwall and throughout the South Coast static fishermen are an excellent source of anecdotal evidence for the existence of squid.
Squid often deposit there egg cases on pots, net floats and sometimes even the ropes that hold everything together. I am not sure if this is as a preference to natural substrate or whether static gear and the boxes it is often shot in tends to provide protection from trawling activity. Anyway anecdotal data from these guys is often good enough to roughly predict wether the forthcoming season is going to be any good or not.
Regards Jon

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your reply and the info! I am actually scheduled to do some fishermen interviews up in the Moray Firth next week, so here's hoping I can get some good information from them!
