Can't wait for the fall squid season!!
Can't wait for the fall squid season!!
when does that begin? Anyone have a line on squid now? I was out at GI about 3 weeks ago and talked with a guy who cast-netted ~90 squid (this was independently reported earlier by another fisherman before I met the guy). I live in New Haven, but am at URI researching squid; its a hell of a commute to make after a night of squidding and solid reports would make it easier/worthwhile. Thanks
They'll be there mid October to mid November. They'll leave by thanks giving day.

cain't wait, my wife suzy squid and i also live in new haven, but love driving to newport when the squid are in. the squid in october are the offspring from the squid that arive in late april. i believe they are smaller. We are begginers at catching them but not at eating them. i hope your reasearch goes well.

Tony from Boston remember us? also mikect how are you? I have been catching alot of blues in the new

haven harbor. how's fishing in clinton boston and clinton ct?

Is it legal to use a cast net to catch squid?

I don't think squid are a regulated species like stripers, flounder and the like.

So probably any method may be acceptable.
johnat: There's Sea Food Festival at New Port on Oct, 13 ... lots of fresh oyster, cherrystones, lobster ... and I will try to get some squid while i'm down there.

I love shell fish and Lobster. Suzie and I will be there. Do you have any details? We will bring our poles. Keep me posted. Maybe we can meet to say hello and grab some grub.

Do you use the same squid jigs?

Nice to hear from you.
Where's The squid???????
Do u use the same way to catch them as spring?

I actually just talked to the fisheries dept of RI Fish and Wildlife to get collection permits for our lab. No, for squid there are no regulations for gear/tackle, further no permit for catching squid required either.

Thanks for the well wishing on my research. Now, would someone kindly get the blues gone? They're great and tons of fun to catch (so much better here than in NC), but not helping with the dissertation progress.
Went squiding last Sat., caught about 40~50 squid in about 3 hours. mostly small. The smaller jigs seemed to be more productive. Ifyou end up going, understand, you cant compare it to the spring run.

that's great news. I guess it is easier to find a parking spot. Did you squid at night or day time. where do you get the smaller jigs?

I went fishing from ~8pm to ~11pm with lights. Regular size jigs still workfine, you can pick smaller ones up at Edwards bate & tackle. 297 Connell Highway..Newport, RI 401-846-4521

It was pretty chilly, next time I am bringing gloves. I want to say there was 10~15 people max. If you end up going before Friday let me know how it was.

Good Luck
