how steamed up would you guys be if you heard that some fishermen are keeping tight lips about certain fishing spots to divert other people from fishing at those hot spots? last year i heard rumors that sakonnet point was off limits to fishing. now i hear rumors that it was never fenced off from public access. i heard that some people caught a lot of squid there by snagging and using scoop nets.
I don't even bother getting pissed about that kinda stuff anymore. As a member on several fishing boards, i'm used to people posting crap reports...especially when it comes to revealing spots. I can't tell you how pissed I used to get when people would post "yeah we killed them today at spot X" What's the point of posting a fishing report if you won't say what worked or where you caught em. I can see certain hot spots that you've done your homework researching all sorts of stuff to find the fish and not wanting to give it up. I have seen several posts where someone points out their honey hole and literally the next day, that spot gets blown up by 10 boats. It's the way it goes. If it bothers you, find your own sweet spot and keep it a secret.
Is it safe to said that when it rain, the squids don't bite?

Not really, some of my best squidding ever, were fished in down pour.
We just got back with the boat where we fished at the Jamestown Bridge (Not the toll bridge) and got skunked. No squid. Lots of bait. Talked to another guy in a boat and he had the same luck. He said his dragger friends were not doing well yet and they thought the water needed another 2 or 3 degrees higher.

Snaildarter
I thought that was you, My daughter and I were driving over the bridge as you were setting up around 8pm. I hope your right with the water temp.

That was us at 8pm. We drifted around Quonset Pier and the military airport. Two big military cargo planes put on quite a show for us as they took off together. We didn't get a bite so after two hours went down to the bridge and drifted around there until we set up near that little lighthouse. did you catch all the lights we had? My buddy brought a 2KW Honda generator. It ran 4 sets of lights that we had in the 4 rod holders. He jerryrigged pole attachments for them. We also had under water lights going. There were so many sand eels hanging in the lighted water but not a single squid. It was very depressing. It was a gorgeous night which was the only good thing about it. If it doesn't happen in another week I don't think it will. May 6th was always the magic number for me. I have friends that are commercial rod and reel fluke guys that will be fishing 4 straight days out of Pt. Judith. They'll know if the squid are attacking their fluke baits heavily. If that is the case, I'll make a run on the beaches for a combo fluke and squid trip. Like everyone else on this forum, I need bait for offshore fishing, some food for the freezer and local squid for the fluke season. If you really get hard up you can go down to Champlain's fish market in Galalee (across from Georges 2 at the end of the street). They buy the squid from the local draggers, fresh off the boat and will sell you quantity (25lbs) very reasonably. Last year I think we paid around $1.25-$1.50. We got skunked last year too. Later eatfish.

I'm trying to decide if I wanna drive the 2 hrs to fish in the rain. I know I said I was going tonight to a few people who are interested in the spare reflectors I've made. I wish I knew if they were definately going to show up tonight. Maybe they will see this and reply quickly and help me decide . Here is the pic of the relector again for those who didn't see it.

Pearldiver,

I'm one of the guys wanting one, but I'm not going tonight. I will be there tomorrow, Saturday, from about 10 am until we Hopefully, fill our buckets! Beyond Saturday evening I'm not sure if I'll be there for much or any of Sunday.

The weather has changed Suzy and my plans for sure. We spent most of our day off staring out the window saying should we stay or should we go. We decided not to go today. We will be there Saturday and fish late into the night. Our second season has not been very productive but we have met many nice people. We met a group Wenesday night that was preparing squid sushami. I enjoyed it with the mild chil sauce. Alan, Sofnx, and buster blue are any of you going Saturday night?
they're calling for heavy rain in the newport area tonight <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> ...possibly over an inch.

on another note, i realized today how sick my fishing addiction is. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> Of the 15 squid i caught tues/wed, i kept 1 whole....as a secret weapon for the fluke season.

Fom th bridge we could see the 4 lights in the holders, but it was still a little light at that point. Thanks for the tip in galalee. The comercial squid you buy from the bait shops is crap. I'd almost rather go without. One fluke will provide some bellies to get you going. We did see the cargo aircraft. We left about an hour after that. Happy hunting, Might head out in the rain and poke around on Sat evening. I will not be dragging a 6yr old around tonight though

Hey Pearldiver,

I was one of the guys interested in the reflector, but I'm not going to be able to make it tonight. It seems like there are plenty of people interested in it anyways.

I didn't really feel like making the trip down in the rain tonight after having a pretty slow night last night. From Midnight to about 5am we caught nothing. A brief rush around day break got us a dozen, but hardly worth the 1.5 hour trip. Best of luck to anyone going tonight!
I have been keeping and eye on this thread waiting to read that the run is in and folks are filling buckets but that just doesn't seem to be happening.

From the reports I have read the squid appear to be there but either very shy or only feeding in small blitzes for a short time during the night.

I know there are plenty of folks out with lights and generators and the baitfish are under the lights but I am curious as to whether anyone has tried to chum? Small cut up pieces of butterfish, bunker, whatever, should help, I believe.

Anyone willing to give it a shot and see what happens?

Hi Miike, I tried that last year and nothing happened. When we are offshore tuna fishing they just sit there in the lights grabbing the butterfish chunks but that doesn't seem to be the case when they are inshore spawning. I think that when they are there you can get them if they are feeding but they don't seem to be around in the thick pods that we see offshore or during the good years when its lock and load.

Snaildarter
It was just a thought to see if maybe it might get them to ball up a little tighter and make the catching better. It seems like they are too scattered around so far.

Thanks for the reply though. Good luck with the offshore season.
Are there any catches in the Newport area? Just lie to me I am going Sat nite regardless
I'll be there tomorrow nite.......

I did pretty well the other nite.....the squid ARE in, but there are skipjack blues and small bass etc scaring the chit outta them as they come thru your lights......that's contributing to their skittish feeding.

We may not get the run we had last year, plain and simple. Every year is different. Either way, I have fun trying, though I have been sick from the many rainy cold LONG nights out there....and went myself the other nite WHILE I was sick, until 2:30 in the morning LOL.......
