Water temp is climbing very slowly today. Still hovering around 45. Yesterday there was a spike to almost 48. If the weather comes in as 4cast then the water temps should be rising steadily.
Nice fluke! Man I can't wait for the season to start. Did they say whether or not they were keeping the 19" 7 fish limit in Rhodie this year? It seems like every year they raise the regs, you catch nothing but shorts that would've been keepers last yr. I can't tell you how many fluke in the 18-18 3/4" range I caught last year
Hey guys, sorry to disappoint. This years min. size limit for Fluke is 20" with the 7 per/day catch limit. Unless I’m by boat or charter I catch nothing but under. If only there was a way to stretch the ugly mothers. Oh well that's RI for yeah.

Advice, head to Mass for Fluke, the limit is only 17.5" 5/Per.

Tatonka.
I hear that Fluke, I'm in the same boat as you are. They are just getting crazy with some of the regs out there now. I'll have to look up the new ones if any, not sure.

We will have to hook up when I get back from NC....I sent you a PM the other day, did you get it? Check your messeges, if not, I'll resend.....

Ned
I got it Ned. Have fun on your trip and send me a message when you get back

AHHH DAMNIT AGAIN!!!!! That sucks! It was tough enough to limit out w/ the 19" regs. This is getting ridiculous. They've raised the size requirement by 2.5" in 2 yrs!
Hey snaildarter. If you ever want a non boater to come along, I'm more than willing to pitch in for gas. I'm very flexible with time so as long as you give me a couple hours notice, i'm usually good to go. About the stonington spot, i've never once heard of anyone catching squid down there. I mean, i'm always up for trying a new spot but agree that w/ the cost of fuel these days, taking blind stabs in the dark aren't exactly wallet friendly.

I wish I was my brother today. He's out halibut fishing in Kodiak alaska to "catch props to use in a copenhagen ad" The best part is the company is paying for all of it AND he gets to go again tomorrow. Makes me think I chose the wrong profession
Hi Flukeprodigy, I wish I was your brother today and tomorrow too!! I was once on a cruise ship that left from Seward Alaska and I had a few hours to kill so I strolled down to the fishing boat docks. There were halibut all over the docks, some weighing up to 200 lbs. They say that Kodiak is much better than Seward.

I do a lot of fluke fishing in RI. It's my favorite fish to target. To get keepers you have to fish deep (55-100 ft) along structure (a line of lobster pots is a good indicator) using big baits (whole squid and shiner combo on adjustable tandem hooks, I like circles).

2 20" fish will feed 8 people unless they are chow hounds.

I'm off July and August to fish. We rent a cottage in Pt. Judith for a week in July where I keep my boat on the landlord's dock.

If there is a good bite up there for squid I'll be trailering as soon as it happens. Let's stay in touch along with the rest of the New Britain contingent. Snaildarter
temp spiked at 46.9 yesterday at 4PM, it is at 45.7 now. There is a large mass of 45-47 deg water around, so it doesn't look like easterlies or SW winds will help, PRAY FOR WARM AIR!

As if my screen name didn't give it away, fluke is my specialty as well. I also go out of point judith but unforunately I don't have my own boat yet, so I fish on the frances fleet probably 15 or 20 times per season. I shouldn't really say unfortunately b/c we always seem to do well and have fun w/ them and I consider those days all vacation time well spent. I just wish I had my own boat so i wouldn't have to go back to the docks at 3 or 4pm when the bite always seems to get nuts. I'm a big fan of the whole squid approach but I have some seriously deadly secret rigs that have produced incredible numbers and sizes of fluke. We'll have to get together and trade secrets some time. I just wish i could find a version of the Owner Boa rig that had a stronger leader on it w/o having to use enormous hooks. All this talk of fluking is making me stir crazy. I guess i'll have to do some freshwater bassing after work to hold me over til fluke season. What's your thoughts on the new size regs in rhodie?

Shouldn't be long now. I'm thinking by saturday the water temp should be up a couple more degrees. The overnight low for friday is 52 so that should certainly help. Fingers crossed that we'll be hitting the run in the next week or so

The RI regs are based on last years quota from what I understand. The thing that pisses me off is the commercial guys are allowed 14" fish. They get more money for the bigger ones so they often cull out the smaller fish. It makes for alot of waste.

I personally wish it were at 17 or 18" but I should be able to put enough on the table at 20" I don't freeze fish so as long as I'm catching and get a few for the table I'm happy. Will probably do more black sea bass fishing this summer as well. Right now all I can think about are those squid!! Snaildarter

Exactly why i get pissed at the regs. They allow the draggers to dessimate the population, then put restrictions on the recreational fisherman. Oh well, it seems they just keep raising the size but every year I still manage to do well. If they go any bigger than 20" , we're gonna have to start throwing whole giant squid to weed through the shorts. I hear ya about having your thoughts on the squid. This weekend is opening day of trout season which is a yearly tradition for my family and friends. We always gather up a huge group of ppl and head out to this trout management area. It's like fishing for the retarded but it kinda signifies that "squidding isn't far away" so it gets me excited.

Does anyone know if RI has public meetings where they announce proposed changes in the regs and allow people to speak on behalf of the recreational fisherman. I know it'll sem like shovelling s*%t against the tide, but if we all went maybe we could make a difference?

Fat chance of us having any impact whatsover. Its no secret that the Rhodie politicians aren't exactly the most straight shooters out there. It's no wonder all the money that should go into fisheries goes into the state fund.
Join RISAA! They work very hard to protect the interest of the recreational fishermen. They alway notify us of public meetings and encourge us to show up and voice our opinion. However, not many of us do.

I'll have to look into that but being from CT, it's not easy to get to those meetings up in Rhodie. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> It's a shame too b/c 99% of the saltwater fishing I do is in Rhodie

Reellife is right! RISAA is the organization that seems most involved and truly has the overall fisheries interest at heart. If you're looking to be involved get in touch with them at www.risaa.org.
So lets get on topic. ANY SQUID?!
Went down tonight. No squid around. Anyone have any luck elsewhere?? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/images2.jpg' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />
Aww thats to bad. Thanks for the update Mopar. Hopefully everyone keeps us informed. I went Sunday. Kind of far out. I thought I had bites but I guess not. Nothing caught. But weather is getting better. I hope we will be seeing them Saturday!
