Fish got in a very quick bite!
Haargh! Ahoy me hearty. A fine catch indeed from the brine in such a short time...Well done.

Went to Philip Island for the weekend.

Fished the Cowes jetty for 4 hours on Friday, but was thwarted by a seal and only one salmon was caught on the whole jetty.

Fished the surf at Cape Woolamai on Saturday for 3 hours (so were 50 others) only saw two little salmon caught.

Finally thought I would wash off my sorrows in the brine with a little flounder session with the wife, to familiarise her (she insisted on using a large landing net, NOT a hand spear) near the Cowes jetty and was surprised to find a few garfish. Nailed two with the spear and she surprised me by landing one in the net!

Again the same seal harrassed us, even in 1 metre of water! Scared the wife good it did. Haaargh
ah harghhh! hi pirate! was it worth exploring Cowes with the spear any further? did you see any other types of fish around?

all the best,

cheers, glen

It is definitely worth a nosy around. We saw about 4 decent sized gars in the shallows and it was a dropping tide, 10-15 knot wind and only 7pm.

So me thinks 'twould be wise to try a rising tide at say 10pm around any of the western port facing sandy beaches of Phillip Island when there is little or no wind. The water looks clean and fertile, we had to wade through schools of hundreds of little bait fish.

We also saw about 30 little sand whiting of finger size so the promise of larger predatory fish is there. Also 3 fat toadfish.

If you drive on a little after Cowes jetty there is a good stretch of sandy beach, it is very dark though, which scared the wife or we would have gone. Anyway it looks promising.
