Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and have a few small questions.
Next week, my family will be holidaying out at Freycinet Lodge, Tasmania. Previous experiences have rewarded us with plenty of squid off of the rocks. This year, amongst other things, we will be experimenting with Baited Jigs.
We don't know much about these, or moreso, how you use them. Is it sensible just to tie a baited jig onto the end of a line with a swivel, or does this just get snagged due to weight. Also, is it practical to use them in a paternoster rig if fishing off shore for flatties and squid? Lastly, is it possible to use them in a float rig?
If anyone could please be so kind to answer with some diagrams for the various rigs, general techniques for Baited Rig fishing, or even how to retrieve with the different rigs, it would be greatly appreciated.

there is some trick of having a deep set float by putting some stopper on the line (which the float will slide up to once the rig is in the water and as the jag sinks) but i am afraid i don't know how to do it! i would be interested to know this too.

I float a baited jag often with success, I call it my stealth bait.It 's running off a hand line while I cast my artificial jigs, and can look after itself.
I set it up as follows:
Main line connected to a leader of 20lb with swivel. then the length of line required for baited jag depth with the free running float(with or without glow stick) at the end of the line is a snap swivel for easy access for on and off removal of jag. The 2 swivels are bump stops for the float. When I cast, the bait and float are right next to each other and casts well, once it hits the water, the bait sinks to the depth set by the 1st swivel.
I always use heavier line with a baited jag, there's more than squid out there that will eat a silver whiting <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hi Guys,
For depth control of a float I use these "Float Stoppers" available at any tackle shop I reckon. These that I use actually came with the float.
To use, simply thread your main line through the tube then insert the pin when the float is at the required depth. To change depth just slide the stopper up or down the main line to where you want it.
Further to this question, is it better to mount a herring head down (on the hooks) or tail down?

Bumma, baited rigs are not good in Busso. Went out today in a boat & caught a dozen with not one falling to a baited rig.
We had a herring out on one and a humble spud on the other on floats at varying depths.
All catches were made on jigs cast & retrieved.
what does this say for baited rigs.
Could another day be more productive?

I'd have to agree, a Silver Whiting would make a great jig bait.

i normally use 3 lines when using baits and have pilchard on one silver whiting on another and a red rocket on the other i have success with all baits but like all fishing its hit and miss one day they prefer one the next day its the other Good luck on your next outing
