I'll post here as well, I am planning on being out there between the 2nd and 3rd week in April....tight lines !

So what are the reports? Are the squid there? @Bob did you go out? 

 

What is the water temperature?

I will be out next weekend (4/23/16) and can give a report. 

 

Has anyone gone out yet? Is anything out there? What is the current water temperature?

anyone try it this season yet?

Might be bit early, I have May 8 last year when it was going good.

Havent had a chance to go out yet, hoping for next weekend......been working on the boat. Good luck to anyone who goes.

My buddy in Edgartown hasn't seen any yet, nor has my friend in Menemsha. They didn't arrive there last year until later in May.

Was out in Hyannis today on a boat jigging. 0 squid. Nada. zip.

Thanks for the report vr4,  I'm trying to get out tomorrow for a few hours. If I go I'll be fishing to the West of you closer to Falmouth, I'm new to this so I don't know if they will be west first but I'll give a report if I go.

@bobsea2001, I know the squid migrate up from RI, but from my [limited] experience, I think they hit hyannis first then migrate down the coast towards falmouth. But I have no idea. 

Anybody plan to go out this weekend?

vr4, Yeah I'm not sure how they migrate either. I was doing a shakedown cruise on my friends boat to make sure everything worked and ran ok. Don't want to find problems once the fishing starts. As long as we were going out we decided to do a little exploratory fishing. Got our first of the season stripers 2 very small fish ( the first bass are always the tiny schoolies ). Jigged for squid outside of Falmouth in 20-35' of water but nothing doing, not surprised but from what I'm learning it shouldn't be long, the water temps were 51.

I probably won't get a chance to go for another week or two,  I'll be chasing trout and schoolies in my little tin boat.

They don't migrate up from RI. They migrate in waves from the edge of the continental shelf. I've been trying to figure out the exact causes and conditions of their movements. The squid are pushing in to feed and breed. The largest pods seem to push in about a week after the full moons. They don't seem to care all that much about water temperature, since they breed 12 months per year. So, my theory is that the fingers of warm-water currents from the gulf stream push bait in close to shore looking for food. The squid follow the bait and currents as well, which happens to coincide with the waters generally warming to around 50 degrees. The reason they seem to "migrate" from RI is because the warm water fingers push south to north, which each wave making it slightly further north. The squid that push into RI eat, mate and die. The ones that are in MA do the same thing. Squid only live for 6-12 months. Alternately, I noticed last year and confirmed this year that the squid seem to push into Newport a few days after I pick my first stalks of asparagus. I just picked those last week and I've heard reports that a few small numbers of squid have been caught in Newport. So, your choice... Moon, tide, current, temperature, & bait or asparagus.

Tried the low tide today from Lone Rock to Collier's. Very few marks and none landed. A high of 11 draggers today. Saw one empty haul just off my stern, but I assume they were landing at least some. Water temp 49 (early) to 52. Just a few recs there who didn't seem to be doing anything. Hopefully the first weekend in May.

I saw a video which was either made by NOAA or the Wood's Hole Institute where they said the Woods Hole area is a major breeding ground for Ilex squid. They are the short tentacled ones rather than the Loligo squid which have the two long feeler arms. I mostly squid on the Vineyard and this may be why we have such a humongous fall run there. I'll be in Mystic, CT this weekend and will try Stonington for squid, and will be on the Vineyard first week of June and I think they should be in thick in Edgartown and maybe Menemsha by then.
