[quote name='pearldiver' post='14239' date='Apr 11 2009, 01:30 PM']FYI, I hooked into my 1st big stripper last sunday night. Had to be 35+ inches . Poped line when trying to lift out of water. I was on a bridge without a bridge net. Lesson learned. Also, nice to meet "snaildarter" in person at local bait shop, hope to hook up as the season progresses.

Striper 1, I see you are from Norwich, You can probably go down to the pier in Stonington and for $1.50 a pound by fresh, never frozen squid, right from the boat if you are buying flat quatities. I know that all of us on this site would rather catch them rather than buy them. But if it comes down to buying, I'd rather get thefresh ones rather than those that have been frozen for a year in a flat in some bait freezer. Snaildarter

My boat will be in the water but it's too early. It will cost $100 for me to trailer up there from CT. I'll do it when I hear they are bailing them at the GI Bridge. Snaildarter

I live near Taftville and have trailered my boat to Fort Adams for the squid run and boat over to the bridge. I have a good time with friends catching squid, half for eats and half for bait. I would not like to have to buy squid but the treks to Newport will come to an end shortly with another poor year. I didn't have a good year as the 2 before it.
Where in Stonington? Sounds like it could make for an evening meal.

They start to push in when the bottom temp is approx. 42-44 degrees F.
No way the bottom temp matches the surface temp this time of year. I'll give it a week and a half.
Unless I'm wrong of course...

Opening day of trout season is this saturday. Its no salt water fishing but its been tradition with my brother and I since 1992 so I'll be at Stratton Brook park in Simsbury, CT on saturday.....dark..and early.
I'd like to place my prediction for the first squid this year. April 28th

unless catches are confirmed here prior to april 24th, the 24th will be my first trip of the season. water temps are still too cold for my liking, and the moon should be in our favor a little more near then
