Hey folks....first post but have been reading squidfish ever since I came to RI for grad school. Been a squid fisherman since!! Thusfar only have caught like 10 total in 3 days of visiting the bridge late night. What gives? What turns these guys on? Been seeing hundreds of squid around, schools and schools molesting the baitfish under my lantern....but bites few and far between. Water temp is 13.4 degrees C (56F) according to our instruments at the Narragansett Bay campus at URI. Thought that turning tides might get em biting...but so far no luck. Had a guy the other night tell me that folks are catching them in the middle of the day...moreso than at night. What's the scoop?

Thanks!

This site is awesome to keep up on the squid goings-on. Not like we can give away any secrets that'll make any MORE people go to Goat Island. Been there many times when it's wall to wall squidders!
Leaving for GI in about an hour. hope to be there by 11pm. More-so hope to bring some inkers back home. See you all there.....Hopefully!

--Al (Seibel lab)
whats going on guys hopefully when I get there I see my fellow Ink Hunters there pullin them up.... I am actually on my way as I type this message, I love technology....hahaha I'll be there with "ECC998" as well ...

Lets get'em guys and gals....

MKS
Just got back was there from 8pm till 11pm, no luck. There was a lot of people there some catching some not. I saw about 15 squid pulled up for the 3 hours I was there. I was fishing by the hotel.

If you walk to the other side of the bridge right near the coast guard boat and you will see about 100-200 squids just swimming back and forth from the boat. The squid never left the coast guard boat area. People tried to fish on that side and the coast guard got on there loud speaker and told them no fishing on this side go back on the other side.

I also seen someone caught a lobster looked like it was about a pound, he threw it back after showing it off.

Will try my luck some other day.
Just got back from GI. It was fogged in. Very few squid caught in the four hours I was there. I only caught 1. I saw a couple small schools, but that was it!!
I fished in my boat last nite. Over by the Newport bridge with a bunch of other boats. We were there from 8 to 11 pm. We ended up getting about 40. It was mostly slow with flurries of some schools going by when we got a bunch.
Man WHAT is going on with these squid (@ gi)???...I put in about 3.5 hrs yest during the ebb tide (bridge)...nothing. Saw 4 caught during that time.

Last yr was bad...but this yr, my goodness...worse??? Looking at my 2008 log, I caught approx 60 squid by today's date....which is pretty damn weak for mid May....this yr? 4 squid (& 2 werent even caught at gi lol).

On a more positive note, I caught more schoolie stripers yest alone than squid all this season...then again, they aint no squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

thinking gi tonight...on the incoming...looks like a late night.

Good luck out there everyone <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Hey folks,

Just wanted to say thank you, for all the PM's recieved on Cape Cod and the area. We are leaving now and I will give a report when we get home Monday....Busterblue/Dave, I'll give you a ring tonight sometime, probably from the Canal area or Smuggler Beach Fishing Pier..

Best of luck to all,

Ned, Margie, & David
put six in the bucket last night. one was HUGE, no lie 22" from tentacles to tip of mantel and fat....he'll make some nice fluke bait strips.

i'm a no go tonight, got a lil get together in CT.
Weather station in Newport harbor says water temp 56.7 degrees. When it reaches 58 degrees things should really start happening. Just a few more days.

Looking to buy a portable generator. Just wondering if this is any good? Johnat and I (suzysquid) are here now since. 4pm nothing zero zilch
Just got back from the Newport bridge area and maybe took 50 squid. Fishing was tight and the weather got worse the bite seemed to stop at 1000ish and we stuck it out till 1100 and headed for the barn then. We towed in a boat to the FT Adams launch and they were very appreciable, that luck! was probably the high light of the night. Squiding was NOT good. Hailed a few guys on the VHF but there was no reply. I was not able to monitor thogh out the night due to the generator running. Hope others had better

It was a good time fishing with Johnat and Suzysquid, it would've been a GREAT time if the squid bite was on. I fished from 9 a.m. til 6 p.m. catching only 3 squid! Two of them in the first 10 minutes and one in the last hour...tried the wall, the bridge, Fort Adams, and finally back to the wall. All 3 were caught at the wall. Oh...and I forgot sunscreen...paying for it today! (Yes, it was sunny in the morning!)
