I have done further research, and what is being caught in Newport is not Blueback Herring they are Sea or Atlantic Herring which are legal. Blues resemble and alewife and what I saw being caught would never be confused with an alewife.
Thank you! I go squiding mostly for the bait but also enjoy eating them! If they are not co-operating (hope it is not as like last year!)then I have no problems taking other "bait". I do not wish to open another "bitch line", poaching is bad for us all, but how are they caught? I have sanged many a bunker but feel these are different but do not know.
I originally posted here because I was looking for help from fellow fisherman, and as there were no squid to discuss, I asked the question about the herring, Bcuz I am aware of the moratorium. I usually find most anglers friendly and eager to help a brother out, I guess some know more about how to be scarcastic than they do about fishing. I have done further research, and what is being caught in Newport is not Blueback Herring they are Sea or Atlantic Herring which are legal. Last point here is that I posted with the intent of letting anyone who cared to listen know that it was a worthwhile trip to Newport becasue if you dont catch one species the other is available. Very sorry for raising the blood pressure of some people around here, you might want to try fishing, I hear it is very relaxing, in the future I will only talk squid.
W are typically a very freindly crowd and very passioante about fishing in general, I hope you do not sterotype the users of this forum as a whole... As for my expreience I have never come across a rude fellow member...
And above...If that is your conclusion, I would still be weary fishing for those, I donot wish any problems for anyone... Also, I agree with the previous poster to end the Herring debate as this is a squid fishing community forum...
I will most likely be out tongiht, hope to see familar faces.
Squid fortune for all,
Family and I are leaving now in the RV. Look for the short chunky caucasion guy w/ the tiny slim Filipina Wife and 9 year old son David. We will be the ones with big smiles on our faces...We like to fish the wall at the base of the bridge, just before getting onto the bridge. Sometimes my wife and I will go on the bridge, but stay close to the beginning of it. We also like the corner of the wall, where parking begins. I may try to do something different this time, walk over to the other side of the walled area ( bay ) and hit that end near the open water itself....Either way, we will be there and squiding all day today and tomorrow.
Stop and say hello,
Ned, Margie and David
I remember you folks from last year! Hope to see you again.
Cheers,
Tatonka
Been there on the bridge between 7:00~9:00pm (05.01.09). Only less than 10 people were tring to catch a squid but looked like no one caught nothing.
It was foggy and windy out there. It was not that cold compare to last year around this time.
I hope that next week will be improved.

I have been a part of this site of a few years and enjoy squid fishing. The point being, they are not "IN" yet. I plan on making the journey to Newprot tonight but am fishing under the Newport bridge. I would just not have a totaly useless night and like to catch something. At this point in time if we were to just talk squid the site would close (not true but you know what I mean). The herring discussion also helps the folks on the bridge to do something other than just be cold & wet.
Maybe the herring are the cause for the squid decline we saw last year. Maybe this year will be worse for squid because the herring are seem to be more prominent than in years past. I think ignoring the herring or anything else "out of the norm" would be displacing some answers as to what may be happening to the local fishery. MAybe we are just seeing them more because we are watching the waters closer at this point in time. All part of figuring the environment.
My primary interest in squid is for bait later in the season. That is why I was curious as to the herring as they are great bait as well. For those who are interested, I have attached a document explaining the distinct differences between the three species. I have 4 fish in my freezer that I just compared to the diagram and I definately have Atlantic Herring. I plan on printing this paper and having it with me just in case. If the herring are displacing the squid, then at least I will have some other bait for the striper season. And we can all still chase the squid and have fun with the herring. Good Luck to everyone. PLEASE NOTE I just tried to attached the file and it would not work. It is a one page doc with pics of Alewife, Bluebacks, Atlantics and Shad. It charts is detail exactly how to tell the difference and comes from the MA DEM. Send me an email and I will forward it to anyone who wants it. I am at robert.duguay@comcast.net
It says "Welcome to the World's Largest Squid Fishing Community!"
Not herring fishing or anything else.
I am a member to squidfish.net to find out about squidfishing, and Squid Fishing Community.
I also like other fishing.
I am here to find out when the squid are in.
Now to those trying to change the forum, shut your pieholes and start another forum.
Or at least another thread topic.
We are anxious to squidfish and reading through the other reports is just wasting all of our time.

I originally started the herring uproar by asking a question as I did not know the regulations. I was looking for HELP from a fellow fisherman, I really did not expect that you would PMS about it, why dont you try a midol, they work for my wife.
I made additional comments on the herring when I did the research and conclusively proved that it is legal to take them, when it had been posted in error that you cant. My motivation was to help others out who were getting confused. There are few if any squid around at the moment and I did not know other topics (fishing related) would cause all this bloating, cramps and otherwise irrational behavour. SORRY. It may not be the time of the month for squid, but we certainly know what time of the month it is for you.
guys n gals.. i made a herring topic post there with discusions as i am not as rude as u think i am... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
Just got back from the rock wall at GI and was out there for a couple of hours and didn't see or catch one squid. Lots of people on the wall near the park when I got there and pretty much all left an hour later. As I was leaving. I noticed lots of lights from the bridge on the Hyatt side they maybe catching them from there, my set up doesn't allow me to hang my light from the bridge. I'll be back tomorrow.
Went there tonight from 4pm-10pm .. got 2 squids ... quick 5 mins runs .. that's it!
Lots of Atlantic herring ... DEM officer was at the GI <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> checking out herring .. it's the legal type!
Nice to see you again Johnat, SuzySquid, spawle, and nice to meet you Moalboaldiver.
Lots and lots of people... now i am home relax for the opening black seabass and tautog tomorrow <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Ok, some of these comments in here I find are making the situation worse. So you have 2 easy choices. Go post in the new Herring Forum that someone set up kindly <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Or
Choice 2. Click the "X" on the top right and never sign on the site again.

Now the dude is coming up with a Red Herring.
Are the squid eating the herring yet or not??

Yes Tony good to see everyone, I caught 2 squid was hoping for more.
SuzySquid.
Went last night. If YOU shut your piehole and actually threw a hook in the water you would know that the squid are there. I was not able to catch them at the rate the Asia crews were but I witnessed them being caught. We caught 18 but were not catching and started counting the Asian (not being racist but they are not english speaking) 10ft away. A boat of 4 caught 73 in 45 minutes and then I gave up counting. The only difference in what they were doing was using smaller pink or green jigs approx 2-3in in size. Now get off your ass and go get some squid seeing you now have the precious information you require.
ive been going to goat island since i was 7 yrs old fishing is nothing like it was then. id go home with roller coolers full now even when the height of the season arrives im lucky with a bucket. i expect the same outcome as last year but maybe a little better. Im from weymouth, ma and last summer there was good squidding in the shallow bay near my house ( 10 ft of water ). lets all hope this year is better. now that i have i liscence now the single most difficult thing is definitely finding parking. last year id go down early with a roll of quarter and keep the meters fed. tightlines everyone.
friends report:
Half quarter bucket of squid one night.. next night nothing.. quick question for you boaters catching squid..
if you guys r running a color fish finder.. what exactly do squid look like on the sonar screen? they look anything like a school of pogies?n if you have a snap shot that would be even more great ful =)
