We will not be squidding this weekend, but I am heading out for cod/haddock on sunday. I will make it down there when Tony pm's me that it is time to go!

As far as fishing in the rain. Last year Big Alan and I went out when it was pouring with about 40 mph winds, and we slammed the squid. The best part is their was only about 5 people there.

Bluefish just show up in LI south shore and squid were sighted too. I'll give it a try this weekend locally.

Just curious how far you've seen people may travel from. Last year I saw a car has Virginia license plate with 4 kids pulled up at GI bridge at midnight.

Wasn't there a guy from Oregon or Washington state that made the x country trip last year and got skunked? I seem to recall a guy from the left coast making the journey and not returning home with full coolers.

I think that their is a moderator that can confirm that the little things we catch are nothing compared the the 2 kilogram squids those guys catch, or the big ones off the southern Califonia coast.

Hopefully they will come back with good reports and many squid!!! Going to give it a shot tomorrow night!

I originally posted here because I was looking for help from fellow fisherman, and as there were no squid to discuss, I asked the question about the herring, Bcuz I am aware of the moratorium. I usually find most anglers friendly and eager to help a brother out, I guess some know more about how to be scarcastic than they do about fishing. I have done further research, and what is being caught in Newport is not Blueback Herring they are Sea or Atlantic Herring which are legal. Blues resemble and alewife and what I saw being caught would never be confused with an alewife. Last point here is that I posted with the intent of letting anyone who cared to listen know that it was a worthwhile trip to Newport becasue if you dont catch one species the other is available. Very sorry for raising the blood pressure of some people around here, you might want to try fishing, I hear it is very relaxing, in the future I will only talk squid.

Was there from 9:30 to midnight and caught a big bucket of nothing. One guy did catch one squid and another had 3 in his bucket but don't know how long he was there for. Will try again tomorrow.

Family and I are leaving now in the RV. Look for the short chunky caucasion guy w/ the tiny slim Filipina Wife and 9 year old son David. We will be the ones with big smiles on our faces...We like to fish the wall at the base of the bridge, just before getting onto the bridge. Sometimes my wife and I will go on the bridge, but stay close to the beginning of it. We also like the corner of the wall, where parking begins. I may try to do something different this time, walk over to the other side of the walled area ( bay ) and hit that end near the open water itself....Either way, we will be there and squiding all day today and tomorrow.
Stop and say hello,
Ned, Margie and David
