I'm interested in making my own squid jig and make it as close as i can looking to the natural food that the squid around were i live eat.

most my squid fishing is done of lorne pier (well at least it has been of late)

All i know at the moment on what they eat is some type of prawns/shrimps and certain small fish, but does anyone have a closer idea (specific species name maybe) of the type of little critters they eat?

any help would be awesome <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

100%squid
If Japanese squid are anything to go by, anything too slow too get out of their way or too small to eat squid <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

The live bait of choice is Japanese Horse Makerel but I know people have used baby snapper and have seen video of them taking Stripped Catfish Eel wich are poisonous.
squid will eat anything they can get a hold of , even thier own kind.

ru 12 mug
u fish in lorne ive seen them caught on tommie ruff and small mullet also baby aussie salmon each fish about 7-12cm i fish at phillip island and use silver whiting i dont go near fake jigs i always use real bait and it always provales as a great bait my dad in the 80s caught 2 20 litre buckets full of squid using silver whiting u also catch them at portsea with these whiting
ive found when livebaiting, almost any dead fish that fits on the jig will do
Mmmm seems Silver Whiting isn't only the choice bait for Snapper... Great for Squid too, another reason to buy it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
