The squid are available in July around Redondo and some do well in sept at Des Moines. I suggest you try these Jigs. I am a importer and have some left . These are from Japan and floating jigs use on top with a weighed one on bottom..

Wow! I've got the exact same jig as the one on the far left (orange color)!
Last year I was squidding at Des Moines and this guy next to me was using that very same jig. He ended up breaking it off, got a little upset, and left for home. Not ten minutes later, I am jigging in the same spot, and I hook something heavy. I haul it up, and lo and behold, it is this guy's jig, stuck in a six inch dungenness crab (couldn't keep her).
I've kept the jig in my tackle box, waiting to see if I ever run into that guy again. Sure is a cool looking jig!
