Hi guys I usually fish off a jetty that is pretty well lit and I prefer casting my jig out and using quite a fast retieve. I like using this technique as its the squids instinct to attack and they dont think twice about it. There are also quite a few squid around the lit areas in the water but they usually spend to much time observing your jig and there are also usually lots of people throwing there jigs in the lit areas and I find that this just scares them away but I do fish around lit areas if there are squid in sight and there are not much people there.

What methods do you guys use when fishing off a jetty?

And what colour jigs do you use at night as I use orange and I find it quite effective.

g'day mate, although im no jigging expert from my experiences so far, i have had best luck at night with bright jigs ie pinks and oranges, but saying that casting in an area that is well lit i have also had success actually more success using duller colours ie the choices of brown and green, normally if i can see a squid, i will cast past him and bring the jig over where he's sitting, if it dosnt follow, i will try another retrieve method, and if that still dosnt work, colour change, also when night jigging, ive always got 2 rods out, 1 with a baited jig under a float and the other rod in hand, no harm in doubleing your chances of a hook up, also i have only ever fished with yo-zuris and they all seem to have glow in the dark features on them, so am able to cast into non lit areas and chase squid in there too, just hit the jig under the tourch for a few mins then cast out, i was askin the same questions when i started out, whats the best colour, the best spot, everyone had different answers, so the best thing is to just try, try casting in lit areas, in non lit, different colours, eventually you'll find your own best method.... i have 9 different jigs and caught squid on them all, there all yo-zuris am starting starting to relise what ones to use and when ie if im fishing during bright daylight i will use either a blue, or brown or green, in arvos or morning, pink and green work well and night i use my bright bluey/purple/pink on or my straight pink.... so thats just my experiences best of luck happy squidding
Jyesic

I use a brown and an orange at night and thru the day an orange.

works well around manly harbour at the other end of the bay.

Hello,

use a glow in the dark jig, also go get a mini uv lamp, looks liek a key ring torch. people use them to set the glue for fly fishing.

The work great, yes a torch lights the jigs up but not liek the uv lamp. they are like $12...

[/quote] you should try using better quality jigs! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> that catch far more squid than cheapies. better action and sink rate!
Very false.......

yes yo-zuri and yamashita catch a huge amonut of squid jigs but so does a $3 one from kmart.

ask anyone on here and everyone has cheap jigs, here in vic i have thrown a cheap jig around in the middle of the night and got larger squid, you have to remember yo zuri and yamashita and ment for egging, not a simple retrieve..........

yes they have a great sink rate and great variety but when squid want to eat they will go anything...

dont be scared to buy some shrimp oil and a fw drops on your squid jig works great

ment to say dont be scared to put a few drops of shrimp oil on the jigs as it works great...
try a side to side retrieve, when they are watching it... i find it keeps the jig in the strike range and the side to side is something a fish in panic mode would do.
hello, i was down at beaumaris saturday morning, had my light in the water, had squid eating batfish that where hanging arouond th elight but would nto take any of my jigs until i put a red yamashita on, iba is color i think. THEY LOVED IT....

they seem to like the jig with a quick movement. side to side you mean tugging jig from right to left while retrieving or tug left, then take up slack line and jig right...
yeah that's the one, right and left, i usually cast into the shallows at night when its dead still and try that retrieve do it really fast, then do it really slow along the same path. usually get a few followers on the second retrieve if they see the first one. I've got the same jig, haven't caught anything on it yet

Try the red shrimp version that works at night too, it's a bit paler/pinky.
i really need to meet someone who lives in japan to send jigs...

You are right but, if you are a squid fisher that knows what you're doing quite well, you still will catch squid on any cheap jig, but using the same techniques etc on quality jigs and appropriate color for the water/weather conditions will definitely improve your catch rate.

If you don't squid often and lack the experience, there's a great likely-hood you won't even notice the difference, in that case, cheap jigs will be fine. OR if you can't stop losing jigs, cheap jigs are GOLD! lol

Also the swimming ability are more precise and variant with better jigs as opposed to cheaper ones which will have a standard style. Some jigs dive slower, faster, float, or even designed for vertical darts on retrieve as to the standard horizontal arch darts on retrieve, those are designed to cover more ground and allows you to work the jig sometimes 4-5 times more often over the same weed bed as a standard jig.

I guess the best advantage for going quality brands is being able to range what color you may need for the certain area or condition you may be fishing in.

The refraction rate on jigs with different color varies due to light and water conditions. If the water is stained sandy color you wouldn't use yellow. you'd choose another color that is both high refracting and different to the color of the water.

A lot of the cheaper jigs have the standard bubblegum/rainbow foil under the skin which gives a lil bit of every color to shine. But the foil grade isn't as good as the more expensive of course. The quality jigs come in assorted skin colors as well as assorted foil colors as well so you can and are able to choose the best possible color for the condition of water/weather.

Or if the water is clear as day and weather is bright and sunny, you would go for a suttle, more natural/realistic color as to not intimidate the squid as they'll usually be a lil more timid.

In saying all this, everyone is entitled to their own opinions based on their personal experience. This is just how I look at it and not saying anyone else is wrong. just thought I'd state that before someone tries to bite me lol.
