Fall Squid.... Got out to GI the other night, slow going but did manage 12ea ( lots of smalls mixed in) after about 2/hrs. not many people there, they seemed to be doing about the same.

Went the canal but that has been real slow. two weeks ago was the best time,  hoping to get one more shot there.

Tonight is going to be cold but low winds so I will try GI

Went to GiB last night. In the first hour got nothing. Then things turned around quickly. Some big size tubes started to bite. In half hour I caught about 15 squids. Double hook three times, they are all jumbos, fantastic feeling. There is no wind no tide moving, just not many people were there. Cold stopped people. My biggest squid is 14 inches, not counting its longest tackticles
What time did they bite?

Nice, I got to GI Saturday night as well, got there near 7 pm. No bite for 2 hour. Move to the other end of the bridge, it bite non-stop for like 10 min. I saw 3 people got about a bucket full of squids. Were you one of them? Look like there is a small window to catch them.
After being on the road for 11 hours yesterday, got to GIB at about 6:30 PM. Ruta was the smart one and decided to go to sleep. Martin tried until around 9 then gave up. Saw only a few caught. Not a single bite.

This morning was another story. He caught 11.  All large except 1 medium. While we had caught many larger squid in Australia, one of this morning's calamaris was the heaviest we ever landed in North America.

It wasn't great but lots of fun anyway.

Whereabouts were you in Australia? I'm in Brisbane, but I know Perth and Melbourne have some great areas too.

We caught squid all over Aussie but Tassie was the best. Especially Bicheno.
Caught 62 other night big tubes

Nice!
They were still at GI last night! Hit or miss. Just have to be there when they decide to show up! Mostly medium and large. Was just ready to leave after not doing very well. One more move and they hit. Got enough for a couple of meals. Late season treat!
We concur Matsquidman. It's hit or miss. After spending Monday through Thursday at the bridge, we caught a total of about four buckets. But that took a lot of person-hours between the two of us. Probable at least 15 person-hours a day.  Usually for an hour or so the action would be fast and furious. Then a long period of no bites. One had to be in the right place at the right time or you got nothing. Since we put in so much effort, we caught plenty. And some were quite sizable.

BTW: Nice meeting you the other night.

3:00 pm at GI one squid then nothing until 5:30-6:00. Good run very large tubes. Surprising late season treat. Sporadic after that but still hitting. Left at 7. Weather going downhill. Water temp down in low fifties. Next cold snap may send them out to sea until Spring.
Looks like the water temp in the bay just dipped below 50 degrees today. Amazingly the tautog fishing has been pretty good right up to this last week but I have a feeling they will be moving offshore with the onset of this cold weather. Thanks everyone for the updates this year.

Went to Canal Saturday night ... nothing. Thinking of going down to GI tomorrow night. Anyone have any luck there lately?

Will also be going out for smelt this wee. If anyone is interested I will update on that.

We'd be interested in smelt as we will be in the area next week. Thanks.

I will be going into Boston Thursday night close to high tide and try a couple spots. I will update if I have any luck.

Any squid down in the Newport area.. things have been kind of quiet on the forum. Smelt were biting in boston a few weeks ago i got 50 with some sea herring in the mix.

I was in Newport last weekend. It was windy and cold but there were about 8-10 people fishing GI bridge. No one except me was squiding they all said it was over for the year. I did manage 3ea after about 1 1/2 hour. Everyone there was fishing for Herring and Maks, they were killing it! buckets of herring were lined up next to them ( not sure what they were going to do with all of them).

I am thinking of tomorrow night for smelts hopefully they are still out there

Pickled herring is very good and lasts a long time.
